California Food Stamps
Around 3 million Californians profit from the food stamp program, now identified as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Based on the remarkable number of beneficiaries, several would say that it is a clear sign of just how important the food stamp program is in assisting struggling people and families ward off hunger and other food-related health dangers.
While the food stamp program does assist millions of Californians in need, the truth is that there are still millions more who aren’t getting whatever kind of food assistance. As A Matter Of Fact, previous studies indicate that simply one-half of worthy people and families are getting food assistance from SNAP. In terms of participation, California falls behind behind other states.
The problem is not because of accessibility, since California Food Stamps observe similar guidelines that other states use. It’s also not rooted to the lack of awareness, since the food stamp program has been around for more than 4 decades.
Instead, officials propose that many worthy individuals simply resist to apply for the program due to the stigma affiliated with food stamps. Results from local focus groups presented that many individuals related the food stamp program with welfare. Unfortunately, there are those who are still embarrassed about having welfare and simply resist to apply.
In an endeavor to get rid of this unneeded stigma, officials have embarked on a rebranding cause. In the state of California, SNAP will now be known as CalFresh. According to Department Director John Wagner, the new name better captures the goals of the program as a health and nourishment assistance program.
The rebranding campaign stresses the goal of warding off health perils by making nutritious food open to everyone. After all, each American has the right to good health. No one should ever be ashamed about seeking all ways possible to engage a healthier life style.
