Getting Around The White Rock
There are many cities around the world were named after some famous personalities while the White Rock, BC is named through its famous actual white rock that weighs 486 tons. The city is named for a distinctive large white boulder on its beach near the promenade. The 486-ton granite boulder was kept white by shellfish-eating seabird’s guano covered the rock, so much so that 19th-century sailors used it as a beacon. And because of this they coined it as the White Rock which is now a very popular holiday destination amongst tourists.
It isn’t always white because it can really get dirty so the residents actually paint it to keep it true to its name. One very interesting fact about the city is how pilots who fly around there would call it “the hole in the sky” which signifies the fact that this city with a whole year round moderate climate is bright and sunny most of the time, not like the other parts of the Lower Mainland that is often covered with rain clouds.
One of the attractions that people like in the city is the Tour de White Rock, a bike road race held in July and participated in by more than 150 bikers coming from around the area and from other countries as well. Late summer is when the Spirit of the Sea Festival is held by residents. It features fireworks display, sandcastle building competition, the usual parade and a host of other fun activities that last for two days.
