Information on Trucking Insurance

Most people don’t realize it, but trucking insurance is much more complex than auto or homeowners insurance. There is a lot of information that must be compiled to ensure you the best deal. However, most companies that offer trucking insurance have gone to great lengths to make the buying process as fast and as simple as possible.

As they are deciding how much you will be charged, one thing that the insurance company will factor in is your driving history. If they see that you have a history of tickets and accidents, they will consider you as a risk and charge you more. On the other hand, they give generous discounts to those people that have clean records.

Insurance adjusters will not only look at your driving history, but your claim history as well. If they see you have filed claims with your previous provider, they will assume that you will do the same with them. Since you will cost them more money they will increase your premiums in anticipation.

Although it is necessary at time to file a claim, you should only do it when you have to. Something small like a scratch is often cheaper to fix on your own than having them pay for it and having your rates increase. Also, because rates increase because of poor credit, you should be responsible financially.

Aside from personal information, there are a few other facts your insurance company will look at. What you drive and haul matter just as much as the competency of the driver. However, not all of these factors are easily controlled.

If you are driving an older truck in poor shape you are more likely to break down or get in a truck-caused accident. Insurance providers will charge you more because of this. However, if you have a safe truck that is well-maintained you won’t have to worry about this increase.

Apart from the safety of your truck, your cargo is also considered. If you haul something that is considered hazardous or dangerous you will have to pay more to get higher limits of liability that are usually required. This coverage varies from 750k to 5 million or more.
