The Speedy Growth Of Online Shopping

Online shopping isn’t just a niche anymore; it’s the norm. For many, the online marketplace is still in its relative infancy, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t growing at a rapid pace. And millions of people would bet on that.

What was completely unthinkable just a few years ago is almost the norm now: Millions of products bought and sold over the internet almost every day. Delivery is a cinch, and so is payment. And many many people are making lots of money on all sides. It represents a real revolution in the way merchandising is done. In fact, some people are calling it a new industrial revolution.

There are probably, easily a million web sites devoted to buying and selling pretty much any good or service you can think of. That is even in spite of the dot-com bust of the late 1990s. And new sites seem to pop up almost every day.

The savvy consumer may be the real beneficiary of all this e-commerce, as sites all vie for the most consumer dollars. Prices are reduced and services are improved, all in the name of getting the most out of the online marketplace.

Lots of people are still scared to jump on board the e-commerce bandwagon, though. The fear is that malicious sites or other actors could misappropriate credit card numbers or bank account information. That can lead to fraud or even ID theft.

The professionals who are employed to know such things say that not everything is what it seems. They say you don’t have to be afraid of the potential for fraud and theft if you just learn how to keep yourself well-guarded. They say to monitor your purchases, and to shop like you would in the real world. That means only agreeing to share your financial data with vendors whom you trust. It also means relying on the encryption services used by sites such as PayPal.

You can also take solace in the fact that your credit card statements do not reveal important data that could be used to track your sales. They will show who you buy from, but not what you buy.

So, if that doesn’t convince you, you don’t have to do your shopping online. But the safeguards do exist, and the lure of online shopping is sure to win you over eventually.
