Travel Insurance – Make Sure You Get What You Need
To be honest with you, when I am booking my own vacation or making some other travel arrangements I would tend to avoid taking out insurance, particularly the insurance offered to me by the company I am booking my travel with. Am I wise to do this or just being over-cautious and not trusting enough? Here are a few pointers that all travellers would be wise to take note of when considering travel insurance.
One thing to avoid doing is to book your travel insurance at the same time as you are booking your holiday or flight tickets. You will no doubt be offered insurance then and there but its wise to politely decline the offer. The best way to find the cheapest and best one to suit your needs is to go online and search via a travel insurance broker. This way you will have a big choice and time to ensure you get what you want.
Before you take out any travel insurance make sure you are not already covered with other insurance you already have such as your home insurance. No point in wasting money now is there?
Once you have yourself a short list if you need to get travel insurance, its good policy to make sure there is adequate medical insurance, which should also include the cost of medical evacuation. Depending on where you are going, if you end up needing to be evacuated back to your home country and you have no insurance to cover you, the costs could be prohibitive.
Make no presumption that common activities that you do on your holiday will be covered by your insurance. For example, scuba diving is almost never covered and has to be added on. Golf clubs too will generally not be covered unless as an add-on or with a specialist policy.
Do make a point of reading the small print to the insurance policy. General assumptions are often made only to find out when one needs compensation from their insurance its not forthcoming. If you check the small print first you are already aware of any exclusions.
